Bishopwood School

A large natural play feature that blends in perfectly as a natural play feature in a beautiful woodland at the school
The children at Bishopwood School have a fantastic outdoor space but the play provision at the school was largley manufactured equipment on the edge of the field near the tarmac playground. The school staff wanted to protect and enhance a small section of woodland right next to the playground. The children had free access to this but the ground was heavily compacted and this was a affecting the roots of two beautiful mature beech trees.
We designed a linear play trail made from natural oak and we also brought timber to make protection zones around the beeches and other trees. We back filled the protection zones with woodchip to encourage worm activity back to the compacted soil. We also go the children involved in planting woodland wildflower plugs around the perimeter of the wood edge.
The play area was an immediate hit and the old beech trees protected so that they can live for many more years in good health.

We wanted a play area that would engage children and introduce them to the historical significance of our location. The design not only provides a fun and imaginative space for our little visitors but also serves as a subtle educational tool, interpreting the archaeology of the site in a way that is both engaging and meaningful.
